Teacher : Karen Ashbrook

Hammered Dulcimer
Karen is the author of two books: the book/tape set Playing the Hammer Dulcimer in the Irish Tradition and Hills of Erin, a collection of transcriptions from the CD by the same name. She has an instructional DVD with booklet for beginning hammered dulcimer that starts with holding the hammers and tuning and goes through beginning arranging and chord patterns. Karen is a Certified Music Practitioner  (CMP) through the music for Healing and Transitions Program (www.mhtp.org).  She provides therapeutic music for the sick and dying.  She can help students interested in pursuing that line of work with appropriate repertoire and style.  In 2015 she released the solo dulcimer recording "Starry Starry - celestial music from the heart" and in 2014 released "KA/PO in Concert" with her husband Paul Oorts.
Her CD Spring Will Come was recorded live at an IMT Concert in 2006 celebrating her 30th anniversary of playing the dulcimer! Karen appears on six recordings on the Maggie's Music label:
  • Knock on the Door -- solo
  • Hills of Erin -- solo
  • Celtic Lace -- with Ceoltoiri
  • Silver Apples of the Moon -- with Ceoltoiri
  • Women of Ireland -- with Ceoltoiri
  • Celtic Cafe -- with guitar and bouzouki instructor Paul Oorts
