Made locally by Jonathan Vocke (see video below of him playing it). We've sold several of his gourd banjos and they're always a pleasure to have in the store.
This is a full size, 5 string, fretless gourd banjo with a walnut neck, standard headstock, ebony violin pegs, and leather tailpiece. The neck and dowel rod are carved from one continuous piece of walnut for strength and stability. The resonating chamber is a thick-shelled canteen gourd with a goat-skin tack head and hard-maple bridge.
This banjo is currently strung with Nylgut Minstrel style banjo strings so it is tuned a few steps lower than a normal banjo but could also have Nylgut Classics and be tuned up like a normal banjo. This instrument has a very deep yet responsive tone with good semitones all the way up the neck. These banjos are great for oldtime, minstrel, classic, reenactment, bluegrass or folk music settings and will undoubtably bring a unique and charismatic sound to your music. Who knows, it could even be the next big thing in punk rock! Working out of Germantown, MD, Jonathan is a recent University of Maryland graduate with a passion for traditional music and instrument building.
