Come see what the banjo is all about! Jonathan and Phillips will introduce you to clawhammer and fingerstyle patterns and basic chords, and you’ll come away with a few new tunes under your belt.
This class is geared towards adult and high school learners just getting started with the banjo. Guitar, mandolin, and ukulele players will find this to be a good way to stretch their musical abilities with another instrument. Students under the age of 16 should speak to us prior to registration.
Participants will need their own 5-string banjo. Stop in or contact us for advice on choosing one, or see info on renting a banjo. Participants in this class can get a 10% discount on select new banjos (good through 2/28/19)!
** In case we need to cancel a session due to inclement weather, a makeup session will be offered on February 19 (Takoma) and February 21 (Rockville).

Jonathan Vocke has traveled the world studying folk music in many styles. His passion for music lies somewhere between the mournful old-timey ballad and the high-octane fiddle tune, after his own experiences and through the words of great American songwriters. Jonathan is an active performer in the DC area, and teaches guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin and ukulele. He also leads the monthly Takoma Park Old-Time Jam.
Phillips Wisor is a songwriter, performer, and educator local to the DC area. He has toured extensively with some of the best acts in the folk genre, and currently performs with his solo project, Stripmall Ballads. His background in North American folk music and his genuine passion for education make him an engaging and dynamic teacher.
Space is limited to 8 students per class! Advance registration recommended.
