Built by Bill Bussmann (Caballo, NM) in 2001. A-style, oval-hole mandola modeled after Gibson A. Spruce top, koa back, sides & neck; curly maple binding, ebony fretboard, abalone soundhole inlay, wood armrest, passive pickup with endpin jack installed. Hardshell case included.
16.25" scale length, 1 5/16" nut width. C and G courses currently strung in octave tuning. There is a hole drilled in the lower bout near the endpin jack which may once have been for some other pickup.
This mandola is from the estate of Orrin Star, local bluegrass legend and flatpicking champion, who sadly passed away in November 2017.
Our senior luthier looked this instrument over carefully and did not find any issues needing repair, or even requiring setup. It's got incredible volume and a nice warm, rounded tone.
