Monteleone Grand Artist Mandolin, 1982, Blonde (used)

Sale price $ 22,500.00 Regular price $ 25,000.00

Offered on consignment sale is an exquisite John Monteleone Grand Artist F-style mandolin, serial number 85. The original owner commissioned this instrument from Monteleone in 1982 - only 4 natural/blonde Grand Artists were made, to our knowledge. The original owner is a well-respected musician in our area who needs to let this treasured mandolin go due to a medical condition that makes playing difficult. It's been very well taken care of over the years (mainly being used for recording), never needing anything more than an occasional setup. Our senior luthier just performed a setup prior to us offering it for sale.

This mandolin has a spruce top, curly maple back & sides (very nicely flamed), maple neck and ebony fingerboard, black pickguard, solid engraved tailpiece, gold tuners with pearl buttons, and full ivoroid body binding. Width of nut is 1 1/16 inches.

There is a small area of wear on the back of the headstock (likely from where a strap attached). Otherwise, the mandolin is very clean cosmetically. Hardshell case with red interior is included, in good shape.

The Grand Artist is considered the signature model of this venerated builder. Monteleone re-thought the design of the Gibson F-5 in the late '70s, and what emerged was the Grand Artist, with Art Deco touches, opening up the scroll to increase volume and lower-end response, and reshaping the body at the upper fret juncture to improve upper fret access. Monteleone's mandolins are played by progressive artists such as David Grisman and Mike Marshall, and this particular instrument will be a joy to play in any genre: bluegrass, classical, jazz, folk, rock, etc.

This is an investment grade instrument which was purchased at a time when Monteleone was still doing repairs at the legendary Mandolin Brothers shop in Staten Island. John went on to be one of the most respected luthier-builders in North America. You may visit his website at monteleone.net. New builds are currently at about a 3-year wait time.
