Ever find yourself in an old-time jam, not sure what to do? Jonathan will run you through the basics of holding down the guitar chords and rhythm to accompany old-time and bluegrass music. The class will develop your ability to hear chord changes within a melody. In particular, you will learn to play a basic I, IV, V progression in the keys of G, A, C, and D without a capo. You will also learn how to build and play bass runs and gain an understanding of the "boom-chuck" rhythm. After this class you will be much better equipped to intuitively accompany a wide array of melodic instruments.

This class is geared towards adult and high school learners who can already play a handful of chords. Students under the age of 16 should speak to us prior to registration.

Participants will need their own guitar. Stop in or contact us for advice on choosing one, or see info on renting a guitar. Participants in this class can get a 10% discount on select new guitars (good through 2/28/19)!

** In case we need to cancel a session due to inclement weather, a makeup session will be offered on February 19.

Teacher info:

Jonathan Vocke has traveled the world studying folk music in many styles. His passion for music lies somewhere between the mournful old-timey ballad and the high-octane fiddle tune, after his own experiences and through the words of great American songwriters. Jonathan is an active performer in the DC area, and teaches guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin and ukulele. He also leads the monthly Takoma Park Old-Time Jam.

Space is limited to 8 students! Advance registration recommended.
