S.S. Stewart Universal Favorite 5-String Banjo (used)

Regular price $ 898.00

Stewart "Universal Favorite" No. 1 banjo in very good cosmetic & structural condition at ~123 years old! Rim bears serial number 18854 - dates to 1896 or 97.

20-fret cherry neck with ebony faceplate and fretboard, mother-of-pearl position markers. Chips at back of peghead and neck at 5th-string peg artfully restored in matching cherry. "Spun-over" wood/metal rim with nickel plating in excellent condition with good vellum head. 20 L-shoes and round hooks. Original-type Stewart "Common Sense" tailpiece with modern ebony rose added.

The original celluloid pegs with square heads (3 missing) were replaced with high-quality early 20th-century metal friction set and new 5th-string peg. Sounds great as strung with Aquila nylgut strings. Steel strings would also work OK with these pegs.

Professionally reconditioned, set up and guaranteed 90 days for structural soundness and playability by luthier-owner. Sold cosmetically as-is.

Case is not included, but we offer discounts on cases & gig bags when purchased with an instrument. We can ship safely without a case.
