Regarding the headstock/fretboard/inlays:

This guitar has some very obvious modifications to the neck but has been confirmed by a Martin authorized tech as original to the guitar. Martins from this era have a small Martin logo on the top of the headstock, no binding and simple dot inlays on the fretboard.  At some point (likely during a refret+neck reset) inlays where added along with the CF Martin logo on the headstock. The best explanation we could come up with is that the original owner simply wanted the guitar to imbue the D-40 style and had the work done some time ago. We have a picture of this guitar alongside a 1960's D-40 neck for comparison.

Other mods of note:

Tuners have been swapped with Schallers, oxidation shows that likely happened many years ago, no way of knowing exactly when. The old screw holes for the Grover style tuners are still visible. Nut was shimmed, likely to add height in order to accommodate higher frets. Pickguard is not original. Bridge plate looks like it has been capped.

Playability:

Guitar sounds and plays as good as any other Martin of its era. Action is measuring a perfect 3/32'' on the low E at the 12th fret, saddle has plenty of height, a neck reset will not be necessary anytime soon.
