Persian Setar in excellent condition
The Persian setar is a traditional, four-stringed plucked lute central to Persian classical music. Known for its delicate, intimate, and deeply mystical tone, the instrument has evolved over centuries from the ancient tanbur family. The Name: "Setar" literally translates to "three strings" in Persian (se = three, tar = string). However, eventhough the name means three strings, a fourth drone string (called sim moshtagh) was added in the 18th to 19th century by the Sufi mystic Moshtaq Ali Shah to give the instrument a richer sound. Crafted from aged mulberry wood, the body consists of a small, pear-shaped bowl covered by a thin wooden soundboard, and the neck is made of durable walnut wood to withstand string tension.
